PLAYING IT COOL, continued

After the renovation and surface changes
were complete, Jowdy asked Stephen not to

The sleeping porch just off the master
bedroom pays tribute to the home's
1920s roots. "In the old days, you had
to have those kinds of things in the
South, because it got so hot prior to
air-conditioning that that was your
salvation," Stephen says.

Marine-quality varnish protects the
furniture from moisture.

A 1950s table from Stephen's parents,
painted dark chocolate to match the
other furnishings, anchors the informal
dining space. Graceful slipcovers soften
the lines of clear Lucite chairs.
